3 steps to Financial Freedom - In this article, we'll be discussing how two remote jobs can help workers reach financial freedom whether you're in your 40s 30s or even your 20s and retire early if you choose to. This can be done in a three-step process.👊
Being overemployed more or less means having two remote jobs at the same exact time. Now, by remote, I mean working from home and not in the office space of your employer. There is one hundred percent fully remote, which is where you only work from home and do zero percent traveling. There's partial remote, which means you may do ten to twenty-five percent travel and that's most likely travel via airplane to different locations. And then there is hybrid, which means that some days you may work from home and some days you will work in the office of your employer.
The goal for over-employment is ideally to get a 100% fully remote job. Now, this doesn't mean you can't get a partially remote or a hybrid position, but if you have a fully remote job, then it will be so much easier to start another remote position at the same exact time.
It's important to note that over-employment does not 2x your work, it only 2x's your income. The goal of over-employment is to be over-employed, not overworked. A lot of remote employers care that you get the work done, not that you're spending 40 hours a week doing it. If it takes you 20 hours of real focused working time to finish all your projects for the week, then that leaves you with a standard 20 extra hours of available working time. By real working time, I mean the time you spend on the project at hand, not on the commute, dealing with employees around the office, or scrolling through social media.
For some of you, the idea of having two remote jobs seems risky and to you, I would say that having two remote jobs gives you the income security to be able to take risks and achieve the outcomes you desire. In addition to the added financial security, having two jobs will sharpen your technical skills and your professional skills, making you more valuable in the gig economy later on. All of this is to say the pros outweigh the cons, especially for inexperienced and mid-career professionals. I mean what's the worst that could happen? Okay, so you get fired and need to look for another job? Oh wait, you already have another one now.
The second step to reaching financial freedom with two remote jobs is to learn how to delegate the actual work that needs to be done for both of those jobs. Now, delegating your work means that you are handing off the projects from your job to be finished by someone else.
Why would anyone want to do this? Well, the more and more remote positions you get, the more projects you'll need to finish. And if you can handle the work of two remote jobs on your own, then good for you. However, for me in particular, I need my time freed up. So when my second job started taking up too much of my time, I decided to delegate the work and hand it off to someone else.
You can do this by hiring independent contractors from across seas and places like the Philippines. A good working wage for them may be anywhere from two to four dollars per hour. One of my remote tech positions was paying me 80 grand per year, so it makes sense for me to bring on a new highly skilled teammate from the Philippines full-time at three dollars an hour. And the reason I say highly skilled is because a lot of them are highly skilled whether it's coding, building a website, or graphic design. I bet that a lot of them can create higher quality projects in a shorter amount of time than a lot of us actually can.
My process for delegating work as an overview kind of looks like this: First, I create a clear, concise job posting on various contracting websites. And in that job post, I clearly describe the expectations that I'm looking for and what will need to be done on a day-to-day basis. Then, as I begin to get job applicants, I go through them one by one, I choose the few applicants that stand out, I check their work, and I begin to email interview with them. The next thing I do is I may have a Zoom chat with a few of them and then from there I go with my gut and the facts that were presented to me through the process to decide who I am going to hire.
After being hired, I add them to my project management program Trello and walk them through my job and the work that needs to be done step by step. They deliver all work directly to me, so I can give feedback and send off the work to my job. Of course, there's a learning curve that comes with this, so it's important to be patient with them and help them learn.
The third and final step to reach financial freedom with two remote jobs is to salary stack and that's exactly what it sounds like - you are stacking your salaries. Two remote jobs is great and will help you reach financial freedom twice as fast, but if you're getting the hang of delegating, why stop at just two remote jobs?
If you get your time back from delegating work, then it may be worth it to try stacking your salary again with a third remote position, a fourth, and so on. Everyone's tolerance and stress levels will vary, so it's important to know what you can handle and to know that it's okay to drop the remote positions that don't work out for your lifestyle.
Now, if your goal is to salary stack four remote positions, make $400,000 per year, and have each one of these jobs require minimal amount of your time, then you should create and stick to a plan that helps you reach that goal. If you currently have two jobs and that second job is full of meetings and tons of traveling that takes up a lot of your time, then maybe you'd want to drop that second job and begin your hunt again for these easier jobs so you can keep salary stacking.
